January
January has short but intense days with snow on the hills later in the month. Its fantastic for sunsets and sunrises, winter mountaineering, quiet walks and good books in front of open fires with drams of whisky.
February
February is when the most snow falls on the hills so its peak winter mountaineering season. If you want to see Scotland in its winter coat this is the month to try. Sometimes the winter snowstorms can bring snow to even lower levels and with all the water reflecting the mountains it can be stunning for adventure phototography.
March
March brings longer days back again and with snow on the hills its a great month for ski-touring. It also often has some great blue skies and sunny days and walking the hills, kayaking or mountain climbing can be stunning.
April
April is the beginning of spring and the gorse starts its stunning display, turning the hedgerows bright yellow and giving off the scent of coconut. Great time of year for beachcombing and can often have really great weather. Towards the end of the moth the bluebells start to show and the blossom arrives on the trees.
May
Early May is still springtime with the bluebells still out and the gardens rhodedendrons and camelia blooming. There are some great waterfall displays as the snow melts from the hills and its also lambing season which regularly also brings lambing snowfalls too.
June
June is a changeable month for Scotland, peppered with bright days and gentle rains to green up the hills and vegetaion,. The daylight hours are the longest in june as summer solstice beckons. Good for long hikes and camps where the long daylight hours are a boon.
July
July is the beginning of summertime, great for coastal walks, boat trips, kayakking, seal watching and the beginning of the mackerel season also provides some good sea fishing. Weather can be changeable.
August
August is a great month for walking, the weather can be quite stable with some great sunny days and not quite so hot as midsummer. Also the heather starts its display of purple on the hills which look amazing contrasted with the blue skies.
September
September gives some great long shadows and good sunrises and sunsets as the days start to shorten, also a good month for walking as high pressure days are quite frequent.
October
October is a month of dramatic skies and rainbows, it can provide some great drama! Stand on top of a hill and see a rainbow in one direction, a raincloud dropping a sheet of rain on a faroff hill in another and sunshine lighting up another. Towards the end of the month the trees start to change colour and autumn begins.
November
The start of November is peak autumn, its a great time to visit with some suprisingly bright sunny days and clear crisp air providing great views.
December
December provides the first snowfalls of winter and the hills can show their first winter coats, its a great time of year to curl up with a good book in front of a roaring fire and watch the weather blow in and out. Its also very quiet on Skye at this time of year so if you like your awe inspiring nature with a slice of solitude this is the month for you.
